At the same time as launching the Box.net partnership, we’ve also completed another API integration: MindMeister is now also available on net-files, a German online storage and file management provider. Click for more details on how MindMeister is integrated in net-files (in German)

For our customers, the ability to create and edit documents online – without the need for locally installed software packages – gets more and more important. MindMeister and net-files complement each other in that we both focus on an intuitive user interface. The combination of MindMeister and net-files offers the best solution regarding functionality and ease of use” explained Thomas Krempl, Founder and CEO of net-files GmbH.
Similar to the Box.net integration, net-files also allows editing of other mind mapping document formats like MindManagerTM and Freemind.

This one comes just in time for Christmas. As you know, the MindMeister API exposes pretty much all our functions for programmatic usage from within other apps. We’ve done first integration projects with other service providers already a while ago, e.g. with atoolo.

We’re particularly happy to announce the integration of MindMeister in Box.net, in our opinion the most appealing online file management service, and one of the coolest software-as-a-service pioneers. They were the first to offer editing services for their customers’ files right in the browser. But let’s let them talk:
MindMeister makes an excellent addition to Box.net’s OpenBox platform,” says Karen Appleton, VP of Business Development at Box.net. “Box.net’s collaboration and content solution provides the best experience for storing, managing and sharing your files. MindMeister gives our 2 million users the additional benefit of creating and sharing mind maps from any folder or file in their Box account, maximizing time and increasing productivity.
The integration used the much improved Embed API in MindMeister 3.0 which allows other services to piggyback on MindMeister without any cumbersome REST programming. All data is saved on the Box.net servers in the MindMeister (.mind) format, but also MindManagerTM and Freemind files can be edited.

Some of you might have heard about Twitter’s announcement to terminate SMS-services outside of USA, Canada, and India.
Why does this matter for MindMeister users? We adopted Twitter’s API as a way to notify you via SMS of updates to your mind maps. Our thanks go to Twitter for allowing us to deploy this service quickly. However, it looks like the SMS features will go away the moment Twitter ends this service.
But don’t panic, you still will get notified of map changes via Twitter or email. It’s only the SMS forwarding that’s missing.
And as long as you are in Twitter supported countries – and they are working to get more and more operators to cooperate - this will continue to work.
We are already thinking about alternative ways to support SMS notifications, though as you can read – even for well funded firms like Twitter – paying the SMS bills is quite something. So if you have any ideas how to support SMS notifications please share them with us!
Update: it seems as if there are already services available that replace the missing Twitter-SMS feature.

We’re pleased to announce the successful integration of MindMeister into atoolo, a new online desktop application that is currently in open beta. Using the MindMeister Embed API, the integration allows atoolo users to access and edit their MindMeister maps directly from within the atoolo webtop, optionally saving maps to their built-in atoolo disk.
Besides providing 1 GB of free storage space for every account, atoolo also enables users to work on documents directly in the browser, without the need for a native application. Which made MindMeister a pretty good fit, of course. There are also all the other usual office-type documents such as word processing and spreadsheets (powered by Zoho) as well as project support, instant messaging and a YouTube integration – check it out at www.atoolo.com!
If you also want to embed MindMeister in your application just go and register your API key at http://www.mindmeister.com/services/api

With the latest release we’ve also launched the new MindMeister API. The interface allows developers of web and desktop applications to access and modify mind maps on MindMeister, both public and private ones (provided you have the necessary privileges of course). When designing our API we’ve stuck closely to the already pretty established structure and features of common web REST APIs such as the ones of Flickr and Remember the Milk, so whoever has used those before should have no problem with the meisterAPI.
Mashups are easily done with it too. We have created two demo mashups with Yahoo Pipes so you don’t have to take our word for it:
- YouTube Mashup
Display YouTube videos for ideas from the MindMeister public hot list
- NY Times Mashup
Display public maps for topics from the New York Times
(alright, so these might not be particularly relevant or useful, but they’re just demos ok?)
Actually, currently quite a few people are creating applications with the meisterAPI, and we are very curious to see them. If you’re interested in developing something too have a look at the API documentation or drop us a line at dev@mindmeister.com.
